When asked, I recommend Coaxial RC helicopters for beginners or as I phase it, new comers to the RC helicopter hobby. With Coaxial RC helicopters, it is possible for a beginning helicopter pilot to start a new hobby and control cost while developing great flying skills almost immediately. Conventional RC helicopter are know for wild out of control spinning. They are inherently unstable due to the airflow that’s produced by the main rotor. RC helicopter have a tendency to try to turn in a counter direction. This is corrected by the rotation of the tail rotor. The difficulty comes when trying to maintain a balance between the pair of main rotor and tail rotor. It takes practice skill and training if you can find an experience RC helicopter pilot. This can be a trying task the first time around but there is a great solution for those new to this great RC hobby.
Today, many RC helicopters come equipped with coaxial rotors that are sometimes called the dual-rotor rotation solution. The two rotors rotate in opposite directions to counteract the torque and the tendency of the helicopter to try to turn in the opposite direction of the rotors. This aids in maintaining relative stability which makes the coax RC helicopters a great choice for beginners. The inherent stability of the coaxial helicopters makes it possible for beginners to begin training for successful flight, right out of the box. With a little practice you will build your confidence and settle in for many great RC helicopter adventures. Just think as a first time RC helicopter pilot you can get all the pleasure of flying your new RC model without prior training or going through a prolonged learning experience. There is no doubt; coaxial RC helicopters are the best choice for anyone looking to buy their first RC helicopter. The ease of flying your RC model as a beginner, whether indoors or out, will guarantee you a great experience. Ready, standby, liftoff!
Had a few neighborhood kids over Sunday for a simple micro RC helicopter competition! All three, plus my son received a micro RC helicopter for the holidays. I wanted to check their flying progress, since I was fortunate enough to introduce them to the micro RC helicopter world. Nothing fancy or difficult just, a competition to determine who could complete three tasks in the shortest period of time and return to my living room for a safe controlled landing.
Kids these days amaze me, with their skills with micro RC helicopters being no exception. I could tell that they had practiced, as they all had gained control of their micro RC helicopter in a very short time. This is a primary advantage that these small flying machines, short learning curve. Transmitter control, flight control and landings were included in the task. First and only rule don’t break anything. Defined courses were navigated and skills with, flight control, flight time and landings were measured very subjective by a participating father and myself. At the end we could not decide who had won the contest but agreed the kid with the Heli-Max Axe CPv3 RC Micro Helicopter, surprisingly held a slight edge. This was surprising, because this collective pitch micro RC helicopter is a bit more of a challenge for beginners. We called the event a draw and headed to McDonalds for an every one is a winner snack. RC micro helicopters had helped again to build community spirit, try it!
Kid’s love RC Helicopters! This is a proven fact if you check the top ten toys kids want most. That’s why I consider RC helicopters as gifts for kids at this time of year. Piloting their own RC Helicopter will bring joy and excitement for the kids and you can feel good about introducing a kid to this great RC pastime. Today’s indoor or Micro RC helicopters are great gifts for anyone wanting to fly in any weather. They are great fun on a rainy day and if it’s calm outside, let it go. Nothing beats staying inside while it’s raining or snowing and enjoying your RC helicopter model.
Indoor or Micro RC helicopters are ideal for indoor fun! The dual bonuses are great flights without a need for much space to fly. Micro helicopters are excellent for piloting inside the house; they fly in the smallest places with excellent stability and maneuverability. Whether banking a tight turn, maneuvering from room to room, landing on the kitchen counter or just having a great safe environment, Micro RC Helicopters are worth considering. There are many micro RC helicopters that can be flown indoors. I really dig the Heli-Max Axe CPv3 RC Micro Helicopter, a great choice for both beginners and experts and can be flown indoors or outdoors. Indoor or Micro RC helicopters are light weight and made of durable materials. They are relatively harmless so you don’t sweat crashes as much. Micro RC helicopters are inexpensive and make excellent gifts for any kid disappointed with staying inside during the holidays because of bad weather. Make this holiday special for yourself and a Kid!
When I was a kid one of my fondest memories was walking past the RC Hobby store and looking with whatever time I had at RC helicopters. I don’t doubt that many of you have done the same. The dreams of owning and flying one off the fantastic RC helicopters was only tempered by very limited funds. As has been my fortune in life, a visit from a beloved uncle, a plea for understanding with real tears, caused my dreams to become a reality. I knew little about RC helicopters then but soon realized that my dreams had not been accompanied by a good understanding of what I had purchased. Here are a few pointers for those of you that are dreaming about your own RC helicopter
First all remember this, you’re a beginner, so don’t run off and buy the most expensive RC helicopter thinking, you are right up there with the big boys. Your dream RC helicopter may be the best but you are going crash. Believe me you are going to crash! Good quality RC helicopters, not toy store brands, can be found that are affordable and tough enough to keep you flying. Get as much information as you can before you buy your RC helicopter. Look for RC helicopters that others are flying. Usually this means that you can get spare parts for repairs after that unrecoverable crash! If, you really want to get off to a good start get a RC helicopter simulator software package. With it you can try out a new maneuver without crashing your pride and joy. Advice from people that have experience with RC helicopters can enhance your learning experience and get you off to a good start with your new found Hobby! After you get your helicopter don’t attempt to fly it right away. Yes, I know you are anxious to get started but, you are destined for failure and will crash! “Been there done that!” Have little patients and check out the Internet, for forums on getting started and flying RC helicopters. Ask questions, it’s the best way to learn. Join a flying club if you have one in your area, you get in touch with like-minded folk, who will welcome an opportunity to help you. The bonus is finding a safe place to fly your RC helicopter. You can get RC helicopters in many sizes from tiny little indoor ones (micro), to huge monsters that can reach 7 feet in length. They can be battery powered or fly with a nitro engine. Your decision is to choose which will work best for you and your flying environment. Hint, nitro RC helicopters make noise and I don’t recommend them for beginners and indoor flying!
Always remember that flying a RC helicopter is your dream and you are getting into this hobby for the fun and enjoy it brings. Sometime frustrating but oh, so much fun!
This is a continuation of my last post on the choices and types of RC helicopters available for beginners and veteran pilots as well. From RC Toy helicopters to RC Jet Turbine helicopters there are great choices for great fun. We’ve done our thing with the RC Toy, Micro coaxial and Electric helicopters, so let fly into the world of Nitro, Gas and Jet Turbine RC helicopters.
If RC electric helicopters have a competitor in terms of popularity, it’s RC nitro helicopters. If you want a RC helicopter that is tough, can stand up to punishment, and is the lowest price choice for a fuel powered RC helicopter, then this is your choice! Their durability been demonstrated over and over again! There are different opinions on the best RC Nitro helicopters but, the amazing fact that the RC model nitro engine sometimes called a glow engine powers these wonderful machines is mind blowing. These small engines can produce so much power for their size and weight making it a great choice for so many RC enthusiast.
There is often confusion between RC Gas and Nitro helicopters, but take my word for it, they are different because they use different engines. All RC gas helicopters use the same mechanics but have different gearing ratios to keep the rotor speed correct. The engines used in gas RC helicopters are similar to single cylinder two 2 stroke gasoline engines, you know, like the engine in your weed whacker. They use regular gasoline mixed with two-cycle engine oil just like your garden-tool variety gas engine with a similar size with the most popular being the 2-stroke gasoline in the 20cc-30cc range. If you choose a gas model engine, you will also have to decide on kind of ignition system to use. Gas powered RC helicopters are large with rotor diameters usually over 2000 mm (80 inches). They are generally more stable and can handle high wind conditions. You can see them much easier when flying which allows for less disorientation. A large RC Gas helicopter is the way to go if you don’t want to break the bank on a turbine RC helicopter. Oh, let the buyer beware; a large gas RC helicopter is clearly not the best choice for your first RC helicopter because of the higher cost of the kit and engine, and maintenance. It’s is best to start with RC electric or nitro helicopters).
RC turbine helicopters are not very different from gas or nitro RC helicopters but they do differ in size and oh, do they cost more. They are about the same size as larger gas helicopters with rotor diameters in the 2000-2500mm (80-100 inch) range weighing about 25-35 pound range. Even the controls, mechanics, and how they are built, are close to being the same! Some larger helicopter kits have been designed to run gas engines can be fit with turbine engines with minimal modifications.
Well that’s your choices ! Which one is for you is a personal choice, and I hope theses summaries has added to your understanding of this wonderful hobby choices.
Looking for a RC helicopter for your kid, a friend or yourself? Need a simple breakdown of what’s available? If so, you should know that there are a number of RC helicopters available for beginners and seasoned pilots in a wide range of prices that continue to decline as technology marches forward. Today’s RC helicopters can be found in a variety of models that encompass Toy, Micro Coaxial, Electric, Nitro, Gas and Jet Turbine. Great you say, what does that do to help me choose the right RC helicopter? You have a point since choosing the right RC model depends heavily on your understanding of the technical characteristic of these aircraft. Without this understanding you are asking for disappointment, frustration and a haste decision about failure and what it means to your continuing in the RC hobby world. Here is a brief description of two of your hobby choices. I will continue with RC nitro, gas and jet turbine choices in my next post!
RC Toy Helicopters have made it possible for anyone to enjoy flying RC Helicopters. They are not complicated, they are surprisingly easy to fly, and most are very inexpensive. Sure, the controls are not the same as real or hobby grade helicopters, or micro coaxial RC helicopters, but so what! They are fun RC helis. If you want to make your controller function a little more like a hobby grade RC helicopter controller, you can possible make a modification to the throttle stick. These are RC helicopters that all ages will enjoy flying!
RC Micro coaxial RC helicopters are one of the greatest and most enjoyable products to hit the RC market. They have introduced a large number of people to this exciting world of RC helicopters and sales continue to grow. The cost is not to prohibitive and the excitement is worth every dime. Beginning pilots are entranced with this awesome rc machine and old timer like me, get hooked on their favorite models like the. Simpler to operate than a single rotor hobby grade RC heli, they are east to fly and skills you learn can be transferred to single rotor hobby grade RC helis. Hover, fly forwards and backwards, left and right, you can do this! How about some nice controlled pirouettes? Thanks for a very functional and controllable bird. This is the major difference between a micro coaxial RC helicopter and a simple 2 channel toy RC helicopter with limited directional control.
RC Electric helicopters are my favorite and have experienced the strongest growth in the RC helicopter hobby segment. Better battery, motor, and micro electronic technology has made the difference! This growth will continue because of these improvements. Electric helicopters have caught up with nitro with reference to performance. Here are my reason for loving RC electric helicopter. They don’t pollute the air like their gas counterparts and are quiet in today’s environmentally friendly world. You don’t have to join a flying club to fly. There are no limitations as to where and when you can fly! Even your home living room! RC electric helicopters require low maintenance as compared to nitro/gas helicoptersand are lighter, smaller, and can survive most crashes with fewer problems. They are very easy to fly, unlike gas RC helicopters, that often stalls out in mid-air and are very temperamental. RC Electric helicopters have a smooth and predictable power supply and are incredibly reliable, almost never quit in the air, and the motors need next to no tweaking. Put this together with a low starting price and you have a real winner.
The Venom RC Ozone 3 channel R/C RTF Helicopter is my choice for an easy to fly beginner R/C RTF Helicopter. Well, I found the Ozone RC helicopter to be really durable and able to fly another day after a low or medium height accident. This RC helicopter is ideal for pilots with minimal flying experience. Here are a few tips to get you up to speed with your first Ozone helicopter flights.
Practice hovering in place and be sure to set your Yaw trim. These are the moveable portions of RC helicopter that, you moved into specific positions, causing the airplane to move in a certain direction. They are called control surfaces. When you are comfortable hovering start working on forward and reverse flight. When flying indoors turn off your ceiling fan, a draft will cause the Ozone to drift a modest breeze may prove too much for the helicopters controls. Of course this can be fun when flying around high ceilings. With a few flights, practicing level flight circles and landing, you should be able to land anywhere with enough surfaces to protect your blades. The Ozone will allow beginners to master the basics of helicopter flying, more advanced pilots; get the chance to fly your helicopter when you can’t get to the field. Doesn’t matter, the Ozone 3 Channel Helicopter is fun to fly. Oh, by the way, Venom Group International provides all the replacement parts you will need for maintenance and op’s that inevitable crash landing.
Megatech’s Horse-Fly RC Helicopter is one easy to fly Co-Axial RC helicopter. My first RC helicopter was a Megatech Horse-Fly and I can tell you it was easy to master compared to the more advanced models I fly now. Co-Axial RC helicopters are great for beginners who are just getting started with this RC hobby. Just think, being able to hover on your first few attempts. That is control. Well, it worked for me and gave me the confidence I needed to move on to the more advanced models I fly now.
This is a great looking RC Helicopter with a main rotor span of 18 inches making it very stable. With its twin rotors you get a flying machine with torque, making it a great RC Helicopter to fly outdoors where you take more risk! The 7.4V-2-Cell lithium-polymer motor battery pack offers great flight time for learning. If you are looking for realism in a semi-scale RC Helicopter Then check this one out. Comes RTF, the only way to go for newbie’s with a great training manual and instructional DVD. Can’t think of a better way to begin a successful RC helicopter journey!
A few days ago, I had the opportunity to test fly the Venom Night Ranger3D XL RC Helicopter. My best friend had purchased this jewel and wanted my opinion. Well I can tell you this is a wonderful flying machine. I was amazed at the handling of the Night Ranger, very crisp with lots of power from the stock motor and battery. The Tail rotor response was very good. Venom appears to be using some revo mixing with the tail rotor because it does not swing like other RC Helicopters that I have flown. The tail holds very well which I really appreciated.
This RC helicopter uses the new V-Series™ 20L Brushless Motor along with a 20amp Brushless ESC and Belt Driven Tail Rotor. It is very responsive and very quick on the cyclic and the collective. You really have to be ready in the hover I noted at least until you get more experience. If you are just starting out with flying a RC Helicopter then the Venom Night Ranger 3D XL RC may be a bit advanced for you, however if you are an intermediate to advanced pilot then this may be the perfect choice.
RC helicopters can take many shapes. I was reading this article and it reminded me of this unique rc helicopter
that was quite buggy. Here is the article!
It’s Fun to Know: Remote-Controlled Beetles
University of California researchers have figured out how to control the flight of the flower beetle by remote control. The four-inch-long insect is rigged up with a radio receiver and electrodes, allowing the controller to “tell” the bug’s muscles to move it left, right, up, down, or to hover.
The research is being funded by (who else?) the U.S. military, which hopes to turn these insects into mini spy planes by strapping cameras to their backs.
The project is ongoing. They’re still working out the bugs. (Yes, we went there.)
